Why the upload failed on your phone
HEIC is smaller than an equivalent high-quality JPEG, but many browsers and government or school portals still only list .jpg. The file is not “too big” in the abstract — it is the wrong container. After we decode it, you download a JPEG you can attach.
If you would rather stop making HEIC files: on iPhone open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. That is a camera setting, not something this page can change.
What to download
For applications and email, take the JPEG. For a site you control that already serves WebP, you can recompress later. This page’s target box is the one that matters when a portal printed “under 200KB” or “under 500KB”.
How it works
- Drop a .heic or .heif from Files or the photo picker.
- We decode it locally. Old browsers that cannot run the decoder will say so instead of uploading anywhere.
- Type a size if you have one; otherwise smart shrink still exports a smaller JPEG.

What about Live Photos?
We read the still. The paired video is ignored. If decode fails, export a single still from Photos and drop that.
Do HEIC files have transparency?
Almost never for camera rolls. If you have a rare transparent HEIF, treat it like a PNG problem, not an iPhone photo.
